SEAN PLAYS PINE KNOB MUSIC THEATER

By Beatlebug (Robin)

Hi Marsha as well as all you other Sean fans! First off, I have to say that the show was FANTASTIC !!! I'll give you a step by step review of the concert.

It was early June 2 and I was very anxious to get on the road. It is a 6 hour drive to Detroit, Michigan from where I live in Ontario, Canada. We reached Pine Knob Music Theatre. The parking lot didn't open until 5pm and it was now 4:30. The lot finally opened and we sat around for an hour waiting for the gates to open at 6:00. Every one else in the parking lot was listening to Beck in their cars and then suddenly I heard Sean's voice from I don't know where. I think it was Sean on stage doing a sound check or something but my husband convinced me that it was coming from someone's car. The gates finally opened. We went in and found our seats which weren't that close to the stage (row PP centre).

I, of course, snuck my camera into the venue where it wasn't allowed. We were sitting, watching the stage through binoculars and watching the arena fill slowly with young Beck fans. A man from crowd control came to up to us and asked who we were there to see, Beck, Ben Folds Five or Sean Lennon. He had been doing some kind of survey. I of course said SEAN. And at that moment I looked at the stage and saw a short (he appeared to be short from where I was sitting), man with dark rooted, blonde hair and wearing black, thick rimmed glasses. He was also wearing baggy blue jeans, orange Adidas shoes with white stripes and a navy blue coat with two stripes across the chest reaching from shoulder to shoulder (one red and one white, sheesh, tell me I don't pay attention to detail). I thought to myself, hey that's him, that's SEAN!. I then shouted it out loud. My husband didn't believe me. I grabbed the binoculars from him and had a closer look. He was standing there, looking out at the not-so-crowded pavilion with a taller guy with green hair. They were both standing with feet apart and hands on their waists. I said YES that's him.

The crowd control guy said.. "Wow I thought he was older than that." He then told us that Sean was playing first and then Ben Folds 5 before Beck came out. I then saw Sean disappear behind the black curtain and reappear over on the stage to the left where he was signing autographs and hugging, I assume, lucky fans.

SHOWTIME

The curtain opened and Sean and the band came out on stage. I noticed that Yuka was on the keyboard. She's pretty cool. Sean put his guitar strap over his shoulder, came to the microphone and did his impression of his mom saying, 'I love yooooouuuuuuu!' and he then thanked everyone for coming to the show. He also thanked Beck and Ben Folds 5 for having his band open for them. He then stated that he would be performing songs from his debut solo album 'In to the Sun'.

By this time I was excited and very nervous yet I was upset that I couldn't be closer to the stage. I wanted Sean to see the T-shirt I was waving that advertises Marsha's Instant Karma! Mag. But no luck...The crowd control man didn't want to risk his job to take me up closer to the stage. I was sad but I said that the show must go on and so I watched the performance that I had so eagerly waited for.

The first song Sean sang was 'Mystery Juice'. It sounded exactly how it is recorded on the cd. It was nice to see Sean playing guitar and really getting into the music. The next song he sang was WELL... to tell you the truth..I don't remember. I was TOO excited. But to open it he said, "this song goes out to you people in the back row (lawn seats). Would the people in the cheaper seats clap your hands" I thought this was wonderful. Not too many people caught on to this line but the few John/Beatle fans around had a good laugh. I liked that Sean did impressions of both of his parents. I th I liked that Sean did impressions of both of his parents. I thought it was 'special.'

He then played, 'Spaceship' and sent it out to 'all the people out there that smoke pot'. This brought on a small roar from the crowd. When he finished this song he said with modesty 'You are ALL fabulous!' A couple other songs that he performed were; 'Home' and 'Part one of the Cowboy Trilogy'.

I did take some illegal pictures of the show but upon development of them, Sean and his band look like tiny ants on stage. I am having them scanned so that I can share what little memory I have of the wonderful show.

When he left the stage he said 'by the way, we do have some FLY t-shirts for sale, just go see the models in the back row'. I went in search of the t-shirts but was again unlucky because when I finally saw them for sale, it was the last one they had and I couldn't get one. Not even a child size shirt was left. Anyhow.. when Sean and company left the stage...I thought.. what a great show they put on, too bad it was too short. I hope to see them again though some day when they are the headlining act.

Ben Folds 5 came out after a half hour break. They were a very talented group as well. Their show was good. Then Beck came out for his part of the night and his show was very cool too. He had the audience really into the music. This was hard for me to see though because most of my attention was on Sean, Yuka, and the other members of their band at stage left watching Beck's show. They also were watching the crowd's reaction to Beck's performance. I think they really enjoyed themselves that night. I know I certainly did.

Well, I know this isn't really the great type of review that you all wanted but it's the best I could do between projects at work. Please feel free to comment, whether it's a positive or negative comment. Oh yeah, SEAN, if you ever see this note, I just want to tell you thank you and to keep up the excellent work! You are truly a great performer!

All My Loving, BeatleBug
