20 YEARS OF AIDS, SEEN THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHY

(Entered June 18, 2001)

To mark the 20th anniversary of AIDS, photojournalism Web site Digital Journalist has published a special issue guest-edited by Vanity Fair editor of creative development David Friend, who's also a columnist for the site. For "Twenty Years: AIDS & Photography" -- a project that is part online magazine, part art exhibit -- Friend collected images and testimonials from such photographers and art world luminaries as Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Herb Ritts, Ingrid Sischy and Nan Goldin.

Friend says he wants "to get people to look at the impact of pictures on AIDS and AIDS on pictures. One of the main reasons (behind) the Digital Journalist is to let people know of photography's role in changing people's perceptions about important issues. Photography matters. And we have links to other AIDS sites -- we're hoping that our usual viewers will go to these other sites and learn more."
