"It's the thing that's going out on what would have been John Lennon's 60th birthday. Liam might be doing 'Imagine,' I don't know if he's doing it or not. Alan's doing 'Instant Karma!' with Paul Weller, 'coz they use two drummers, so Steve and Allen are doing that." Noel went on to say: "I'm doing 'Tomorrow Never Knows' with Johnny Marr. Be great to have him playing guitar on some of our stuff." Moloko will also be featured on the show which will be presented by Jo Whiley and Jools Holland.
"A cruel story" - Yoko Ono Reported for AP by Holger Mehlig (Some sections translated by automated Alta Vista Babelfish; with additional comments by IK!)
Note: A friend of IK!'s in Germany has promised to send items from this event, Saying that a visit to Berlin always "energizes" her, Yoko was on hand for the installation of "Freight Train" - a symbolic reminder of a tragic event in the mid-80's when several Mexican workers attempting to enter the United States illegally, were left locked in the back of a truck somewhere in the desert, abandoned there by the driver. The men suffered an agonizing death of suffocation. Although Yoko's train car depicts a different type of violence - it is riddled with bullet holes which allow light to shine through - the object is to show "a cruel story" from the 20th Century. Yoko is hopeful that the 21st Century will bring better times to humanity - which is and has been a constant theme in her music and art. Asked why she brought the exhibit to Germany (the car may remind some of the cars used to transport Jewish citizens to death camps during the Holocaust of World War II), Yoko's response was simple and obvious: "I like Berlin, and the city said okay to the work of art." Yoko says the bullet-riddled freight car is a symbol for violence which can be shown anywhere in the world. The "Freight Train" exhibit will be in Berlin through October 1. It then will continue to roll, possibly to Liverpool, England, Vienna or New York. One destination IK! is interested in is Detroit, Michigan - and the exhibit may also travel to Mexico. The Installation is part of the 6th Annual Long Night of Museums August 26 which features more than 100 museums showing works including concerts, readings and in a separate exhibit, is Yoko's Telephone Piece at Stiftung Starke. During this event, once a day, the phone will ring and whoever is in proximity of the phone can pick it up and talk to...Yoko! Okay people..stop hovering around that telephone.... From Ono-Net, Sari Gurney - AIU: A Yoko Ono Box A new installation by Yoko Ono will have its the world premiere in Berlin, Germany on August 25th 2000. Freight Train is located at the famous square Schloßplatz Berlin Mitte. It is a wooden freight train car with closed doors, perforated by innumerable bullet holes. Inside the freight train car are strong sources of light, and white light beams shine through the bullet holes in all directions. It is a very symbolic work, and it is based on a real occurence of human brutality which involved a group of Mexican workers trying to arrive illegally into the USA some years ago. For Yoko Ono Freight Train is "a work of atonement for the injustice and pain we've experienced in this century, expressing resistance, healing and hope." The installation is not only a memorial for all the injustice in the 20th century, but also a manifest of resistance, healing and hope for the future. The installation will travel from Berlin to Detroit (USA), Tokyo (Japan) and Mexico City (Mexico). Freight Train: Yoko Ono in Berlin August 25th - October 1st 2000 The installation has been realized by Stiftung Starke and Fine Art Rafael Vostell. IK! will definitely try to make it to the exhibit in Detroit.
Plastic Beetle Tune?
Thanks to Richard Joly at OnoWeb (Entered August 16, 2000)
Paul described the track as a "manic Beatles single." "It's a new little piece of Beatles," he said. "It's more underground than what you usually hear from me, but I like to be free enough to do this sort of thing." The track mixes recordings of the Beatles chatting during studio sessions between 1965-1969 with previously unreleased guitar work by the group. McCartney created "The Liverpool Sound Collage" to accompany an exhibition at the Tate Liverpool gallery by artist Peter Blake. It takes the form of an ambient soundtrack of life in the northern city, featuring everything from interviews with local shoppers to quotes from students. "Free Now" will not be released as a commercial single. It will be available to the public only in album form. The Liverpool Sound Collage web site reported that Paul collated elements for his collage on the streets of Liverpool, where he interviewed astonished shoppers and passers by on his tape recorder. The locally recorded elements range from snatches of chat with students at The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and background at the soundcheck for Paul's return concert at The Cavern to extracts from The Liverpool Ontario and the sound of The Mersey. Extending the theme of using sound fragments from local voices, Liverpool Sound Collage also contains out-takes from recordings made between 1965-69 with George Harrison, Ringo Starr and John Lennon. One graphic on the web site features the words "Plastic Beetles" - not to be confused with the Plastic Ono Band. http://www.liverpoolsoundcollage.com
Jimmy Carter Tribute Features "Imagine"
Thanks to Larry McGahey, webmaster,Old World Distributors (Entered August 15, 2000)
Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and a delegate from Georgia, was honored at the Democratic Convention in Los Angeles on Monday (August 14) as their senior statesman. Throughout the filmed tribute to the former president, John Lennon's "Imagine" was played, a fitting tribute, since Jimmy and wife, Rosalynn Carter have dedicated their lives to helping all the people, share all the world. Their Carter Center in Atlanta is dedicated to helping keep peace around the world, aiding poor countries that need medical supplies and finding solutions to human rights problems that other agencies have not tackled. The Carters have also been extremely active in the Habitat for Humanity organization, pitching in with hammers and saws to build houses for people who couldn't otherwise afford decent housing. 66-year-old Jimmy Carter, more than any other ex-president, has dedicated his life to true public service.
You may say he's a dreamer..but he's not the only one.

Elton Sings for John Thanks to Richard Joly Ono-Web (Entered July 14, 2000) From Yahoo Daily News: LIVERPOOL, England (AP) - Elton John made a long-awaited return to Liverpool Thursday with his first show there in 18 years, and dedicated his performance to one of the city's most famous sons, John Lennon. Sir Elton played a three hour set of ballads and rock and roll anthems such as "Daniel" and "Candle In The Wind" to a crowd of 3,500. Opening the song "Empty Garden," written for Lennon, he said: "I have played this song in New York and Hamburg but the most fitting place and the only place to play it is here in Liverpool." The 53-year-old star sat at his Yamaha piano wearing a single breasted red satin lounge suit embroidered with pink flowers and the word Medusa emblazoned in diamante stones across his back. Introducing the number "Ticking," about the gun culture in the United States, he told the crowd: "This song was written back in the 1970s...it is a sad indictment on America that nothing has changed since then." Elton, as most of you know, is Sean Lennon's godfather. Related story: John Lennon Anti-Gun Statue in Trafalgar Square
John's Song Is Number One With Other Songwriters Thanks to Larry McGahey (webmaster, Old World Distributors ) (Entered July 13, 2000) See: http://www.bostonherald.com/entertainment/music/songs07122000.htm LONDON (AP) - A group of legendary pop songwriters has named the Beatles' "In My Life" as the greatest song ever written. The autobiographical John Lennon song, which appeared on the 1965 "Rubber Soul" album, beat the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" to lead the list, which was compiled from Top 10 lists submitted by 20 famous songwriters, including Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, legendary '50s lyricist Jerry Leiber and Burt Bacharach collaborator Hal David. Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg's "Over The Rainbow," from "The Wizard of Oz," was third. The Beatles had two songs on the list, compiled for the British music magazine Mojo. The full list, with the artists who made then famous:
1 - IN MY LIFE - The Beatles. We at IK! agree "In My Life" is a great song. Tom and I had my brother sing it at our wedding in 1977.

Yoko Sues Subway Firm in Tokyo Thanks to Larry McGahey (webmaster, Old World Distributors ) (Entered July 13, 2000) From Reuters in Tokyo, it was reported that Yoko filed a lawsuit in a Japanese court Thursday (July 13) demanding a Tokyo subway operator stop the sale of a ticket showing a portrait of John Lennon, according to Kyodo news agency. Yoko, who said the Teito Rapid Transit Authority in April used a portrait of John by the artist Andy Warhol without permission on a $10 ticket, is seeking $130,000 in damages, Kyodo quoted her lawyers as saying. Yoko said the card violated her copyright on secondary use of the portrait. Subway officials said the picture on the multiple journey ticket, which hit the market in April in conjunction with an Andy Warhol exhibition at a Tokyo museum, was provided by the organizers. The company produced the card because a contract said the exhibition organizers would handle copyright disputes, they said. The subway company stopped selling the card in late May after learning about the dispute in the wake of Yoko's complaint.
