TICKETS TO RADIO CITY
CONCERT ON SALE AUGUST 30
(Entered August 23, 2001)
Thanks to Mark SanAngelo
Barry A. Jeckell reported on Billboard Online that "Come Together: A
Night for John Lennon" tickets will go on sale August 30 at 10 AM through
Ticketmaster. Ticket prices range from $53.50 to $203.50. A special
12-hour, password-protected Internet pre-sale for members of Radio City's
"Backstage Access" program begins at 9 a.m. a day earlier. Several
local radio stations will have separate passwords to access the pre-sale as part
of a special promotion.
Latest word on performers includes Marc
Anthony, Beck, Moby
and Nelly Furtado. The program will be
led by musical director Dave Stewart of
the Eurythmics.
"We're gonna be doing, 'I Am the Walrus,'" Furtado told Rolling
Stone. "Some rendition of it. It's not going to be as good as Oasis',
but we'll try our best."
Additional artists are expected to sign on. An official announcement is expected
next week.
The show will be held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on September
20th and will be taped by TNT for airing on that cable network on October 9.
Producers had originally expressed interest in staging the Lennon tribute in
May, but reportedly rescheduled due to the touring plans of several major acts
that were interested in taking part.
The special follows TNT's "An All Star Tribute to Brian Wilson," which
was staged in March at Radio City and premiered on the network on July 4. TNT
inaugurated its series of tributes in 1998 with "Burt Bacharach: One
Amazing Night," and has since staged events honoring Johnny Cash, Bob
Marley, and Joni Mitchell.

capacity Manchester Evening News Arena in England on October 12th. The
concert is to coincide with the 30th Anniversary of the UK release of
"Imagine." The event will be recorded for later broadcast on

UNITED STATES
Barring natural disasters or typhoid, IK!'s Tom and Marsha will be in attendance
at TNT's "All-Star Tribute to John
Lennon" which is scheduled for September 20th at Radio City Music Hall in
New York City. Said to be in the spirit of the recent Brian Wilson
tribute, the Lennon gala will feature a lineup of performers that Yoko Ono and
the event's producer Ken Ehrlich, are still negotiating. Early reports
have Aerosmith as one of the acts. (Aerosmith recorded "Come Together"
some years ago.)
Yoko's longtime spokesman, Elliott Mintz, didn't confirm any performer but said
the intention is to round up "the newer and younger artists who can best
contemporize John's music". Speakers will be involved, as well, said
Mintz, who added that proceeds from the event, which TNT will show at a later
date, are being earmarked to a number of gun-control charities.

JOHN LENNON LETTER TO
PAUL MCCARTNEY
TO BE AUCTIONED IN OCTOBER
(Entered August 13, 2001)

The Album Network (8/10/01)
reported that a not very friendly 30-year-old letter that John wrote to Paul
will be put on the auction block October 4 at Christie's. The six-page letter
to Paul and his wife, Linda, blasts the McCartneys for the way they treated
the marriage of John and Yoko.
John is quoted in an excerpt in the Christie's catalog: "I hope you
realize what shit you and the rest of my kind and unselfish friends laid on
Yoko & me since we have been together. It might have been sometimes
a bit more subtle or should I say 'middle class' - but not often."
The letter was in response to a letter Linda had written to John attacking him
for publicly criticizing the Beatles.
John concludes his letter with, "In spite of it all, love to you both
from us two."
Christie's estimates that the letter will be sold for over $110,000. The
current owner wishes to remain anonymous.

GEORGE HARRISON DENIES BEING NEAR DEATH-"DISAPPOINTED
& DISGUSTED" WITH NEWS REPORTS
PEOPLE online
reports that George and his wife, Olivia,
have issued a statement in London, saying that reports of his imminent demise
from cancer have left him "disappointed and disgusted."
George, who earlier this month confirmed reports that he had been treated at a
cancer hospital in Switzerland (reportedly for a brain tumor), said in the
statement that he was "active and feeling very well."
Earlier this year, George was treated for removal for a tumor on his lung, and
he has acknowledged that he fought throat cancer in 1997, a condition he
blamed on years of cigarette smoking.
A London paper over the weekend quoted longtime friend and Beatles producer
George Martin as saying George did not have long to live. But in a strongly
worded response, George and Olivia said Martin had denied giving any interview
on the subject of Harrison's death. "The reports were unsubstantiated,
untrue, insensitive and uncalled for," the statement said. "George
Martin. . . has emphatically denied speaking to any newspaper."
Martin's agent Adam Sharp told CBS News that Martin never gave an exclusive
interview to the British newspaper that quoted him and the producer has no
idea where the quotes came from. Furthermore, Sharp said, "George
Harrison is fine and working on his new album."
Paul McCartney would not speak of George's health during a recent interview with
Larry King (CNN) and it seemed strange to think that Martin, who is also a
close friend of George's, would make statements on Harrison's behalf about
something so intensely personal and important.

GEORGE HARRISON SAID TO BE NEAR DEATH
According to an article by James B. Trawicki in today's Sunday Mirror, George Harrison is close
to death from cancer. George is being treated for a brain tumor in
Switzerland. The brain tumor is said to be secondary to the lung cancer
which he was treated for at Mayo's Clinic earlier this year. George had
a lump in his neck removed in 1997.
Last night, George's close friend and former Beatles producer Sir George
Martin said: "He is taking it easy and still hoping that the thing will
go away. He has an indomitable spirit but he knows that he is going to die
soon and he is accepting of that."
George is being treated by Switzerland's leading cancer specialists at a
clinic near Geneva. His second wife Olivia is at his side.
George Martin added: "George is very philosophical, he has been near
death many times and he's been rescued many times as well."
It was just a couple of years ago that George was nearly killed by a man who
broke into his estate in England and stabbed him in the chest with a
knife. George was saved by Olivia, who beat the intruder with a lamp.

GEORGE HARRISON HEALTH
SCARE
(Entered July 9, 2001)
|
From CNN and InfoBeat:
Fans around the world were thrown into a panic yesterday when it was reported
by a Swiss newspaper that George Harrison had been undergoing radiation
therapy for a brain tumor at a hospital there.
George issued a statement to the news media late yesterday saying he is
"feeling fine" after a successful course of radiotherapy at a
hospital in Switzerland.
A statement from George's solicitor revealed that he underwent treatment at
the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland in Bellinzona over a month ago,
the UK Press Association reported.
The modest-looking hospital is on the outskirts of the picturesque
mountainside town - better
known for its imposing castle than as a place where the stars seek medical
care.
The statement said George had a course of radiotherapy at the clinic and that
doctors do not see any need for further treatment at the hospital.
|
George said: "I am feeling fine
and I am really sorry for the unnecessary worry which has been
caused by the reports appearing in today's press. Please do not
worry."
Reports about George undergoing treatment came two months after he
received lung cancer
therapy in the U.S.
Oncology Institute director Luca Borner declined to confirm the
reports due to patient confidentiality, the Associated Press
reported on Monday.
George, 58, had surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota,
at the beginning of May to remove a cancerous growth from one of his
lungs.
His lawyers said that after the successful operation he had traveled
to Italy to rest.
IK! Editor's Note:
On July 20th and 21st, I'll be walking with our radio station in the Sault Ste. Marie Relay
for Life, sponsored by the American Cancer Society. We will have a luminaria
lit for George on the track that day.

YOKO VISITS JOHN'S
CHILDHOOD SCHOOL...GIVES MORE MONEY
(Entered July 2, 2001)
YOKO took time out of her Liverpool trip on Monday to visit Dovedale Infants School in Mossley Hill where John
attended as a boy. The
Liverpool Echo reported that the students at the school gave Yoko a warm
welcome..a welcome that touched her deeply.
"I am very emotional," she admitted after
getting a guided tour of the school. "It's fantastic, I didn't
think the experience was going to this emotional. I am very happy and very glad that I
came."
The Echo reported that last year, Yoko made a 'substantial donation' to
the school to help pay for a new playground. On Monday, she handed over more cash today to help
complete the job.
John went to Dovedale Infants between 1946 and
1948. And when he first brought Yoko back to Liverpool, he made a point
of taking her there. Yoko said Monday, "John was a very high spirited boy,
I'm sure, but he remembered his school days so dearly. When he brought me here to Liverpool for the
first time he showed me this school. They were good days for him."
Yoko visited each classroom in the infants school
to meet the children. When they thanked her for coming she told them:
"I wanted to come and see you. I am very glad I came. Saying thank you is so
sweet. I will always remember you."
She even took time out to play on one of the giant
pencils erected in the centre of the yard.
Head teacher Wen Williams said: "I was a huge
Beatles fan. I never thought that one day I would be the head at John's
old school, never mind meet Yoko. What she has done is wonderful. We are very
grateful for her coming."

YOKO officially unveiled the new name of Liverpool's city airport and it's new logo: "Liverpool John Lennon Airport, above us only
sky." Wearing a black trouser suit and purple-lensed
sunglasses, Yoko said: " I am delighted that Liverpool Airport has
decided to choose John's name. John was always remembered for his sense of
fun in life and I hope that John Lennon Airport will send a big smile to
all corners of the world." The
Liverpool Echo reported that before unveiling the new name and logo, Yoko joked
about renaming other places in the airport like Strawberry Fields Café
or Give Peace a Chance Lounge.
She added: "As John said, 'There is no hell
below - above us only sky.' John would have been very proud, I
think."
The airport's biggest customer,
EasyJet, welcomes
the inspirational name change. "We support the bold move
wholeheartedly," a spokesman said. "This is the first time that a UK airport has
been named after a person and we believe that if this helps to promote
both the region and the airport then it should be welcomed."
Yoko also called for the city of Liverpool to
transform John's childhood home, on Menlove Avenue, in a museum to her
late husband. The four-bedroom semi has recently come up for sale
after its owner passed away.
On Monday afternoon
Yoko received an honorary degree
form Liverpool University in a ceremony at the Philharmonic Hall.
From Reuters-London: In a morning ceremony at the Liverpool John Lennon Airport,
Yoko said, "I was honored and delighted when I first heard of the proposal
to name the airport here in Liverpool after John. I am proud to be here today to
celebrate one of Liverpool's greatest men."
The airport's owner Peel Holdings said the new name -- Liverpool John Lennon
Airport -- will be used from next spring when its new £32 million terminal
opens. "Throughout the world, John Lennon is synonymous with
Liverpool," the airport's chairman, Robert Hough said in a statement.
"He is an integral part of Merseyside's heritage and the new name places
the airport firmly on the international map."

Yoko Ono's delight at unveiling John
Lennon airport logo

Photo from BBC
Yoko Ono has said John Lennon would have been very
proud of the decision to rename Liverpool Airport in his honor. Yoko
unveiled the new logo for Liverpool John Lennon Airport, the name which will be
used from the spring of next year. The logo also carries a cartoon self-portrait
of John and the strapline "Above us Only Skies" - a line from his
classic track "Imagine."
Yoko said: "Thank you very, very much for remembering John and for loving
John. I am delighted Liverpool has decided to honor John in this way. John
always reminded of us of the sense of fun in life. I hope the airport will send
a great message to all corners of the world. As John said there is no hell below
us, above us only skies."
Unveiling the new logo, she said: "It is beautiful. John would have been
very proud. Thank you."
She was also presented with a
scaled-down version of the 7ft 6in statue of John
which will be a focal point at the airport. The
half-ton statue shows a striding John Lennon in a suit and T-shirt, wearing his
trademark round glasses and with his hair slicked back.
Neil Pakey, commercial director of
the airport, said Paul McCartney's name had not been included in the rebranding
because it was a celebration of a full lifetime. He
said: "Around the world airports named after individuals tend to be a
celebration of their entire life."
Earlier Story:
Liverpool's city airport will be renamed
Liverpool John Lennon Airport in a ceremony which will be attended by Yoko,
Monday, July 2. The terminal will open in the spring. This marks the
first time an airport in the United Kingdom is being named after a famous
person. The BBC reported that Yoko will visit the airport and be presented
with a specially commissioned statute of John.
The new terminal will feature a self-portrait of
John with the words "Above us only sky" taken from his classic anthem
Imagine. A sculpture, commissioned from Tom Murphy, will stand inside the
building. Airport owners Peel Holdings saw the move as a "fitting and
lasting tribute" to Lennon.
Yoko, who will receive an honorary doctorate
from Liverpool University, said: "As a gateway to the region this will be
seen by millions of passengers and is a fitting tribute to the memory of my late
husband." The Beatles regularly used the airport on their travels in the
early days of the band.
'Warmth and support'
Sean Lennon, said: "It is a great honor for my dad and for our family. My
mom and I are very proud and would like to thank the people of Liverpool for all
their warmth and support over the years."
And John's son Julian said: "I am very happy to see that Liverpool has
taken the opportunity to remember one of its most famous citizens in a way that
reaches millions of people. It seems that the name John Lennon will be around
for a very long time - one way or another."
John Lennon joins figures like John F Kennedy
(New York), Leonardo Da Vinci (Rome) and Josef Strauss (Munich) who have had
airports named after them.
