John Lennon: My Brother
Published 1988, Henry Holt Books
By Julia Baird with Geoffrey Giuliano
With Foreword by Paul McCartney

On the back cover, Ms. Baird writes:
"My sister Jacqui and I were aware of John only as the clever big brother we had always known.  We were just as thrilled with his first public appearance on the back of a coal lorry in a Liverpool side street a we were with the Beatles' first Royal Command Performance. His emergence as the man the rest of the world knew was so gradual that we were never shocked into thinking, 'We've got a superstar in the family.' "

Julia Baird describes in her book the five women who shaped the lives of John and his younger sisters. She tells of the love they shared for their mother, who died when John was just a teenager.

Daddy, Come Home: The True Story
Of John Lennon and His  Father
Published 1990, Angus and Robertson
By Pauline Lennon

This book is said to be based on John's father's never-before published biography, as related by Alfred Lennon's widow, Pauline.

From the back cover:
"The truth about the alternately stormy and fond relationship John Lennon had with his father has always been concealed.  Until now. Daddy, Come Home, the riveting story of Freddie Lennon's relationship with the young John, and their eventual deathbed reconciliation is told for the first time by Pauline Lennon - the girl who made front page news when as a 20-year-old she married the 55-year-old Lennon."

John Lennon: In My Life
Published 1984, Coronet
By Pete Shotton and Nicholas Schaffner

First published in the United States in 1983, this book details Pete Shotton's friendship with John Lennon from the time they were children, until their final meeting during John's "househusband" years at the Dakota.

Publisher's Weekly wrote: "A richly anecdoted book written with affection..certainly one of the best recent books about Lennon."

Shotton writes: "I hope that most of you will know the great pleasure of having a very special friend - or, as we call it in Liverpool, a 'best mate.' John Lennon was my best mate.  Over a period of almost thirty years - from the time I first met him at the age of six to our last meeting in 1976 at his home in New York - I probably spent more time with him  than anyone else."

A Twist of Lennon
Published 1978, Avon Books
By Cynthia Lennon

On the back of this paperback book is written the blurb: "Attention Closet Beatlemaniacs: Unless John, Paul, George or Ringo write their memoirs, this is as close as you're going to get." Well, as we all know, those memoirs have been written in the form of Beatles Anthology but we do have to give credit to Cynthia for being one of the very first to write a "I was there" book - and she wrote it while John was still alive.

The book covers her time with John from Art School to their breakup - with her last chapter titled Yoko Ono.  That chapter begins with Cynthia's words: "Although John said very little about the impression I made as his wife I always felt that he expected a great deal more of me. I really wasn't on his wavelength as much as he would have liked."  Cynthia goes on: "When I first set eyes on Yoko I knew that she was the one for John."
