JULIAN LENNON AT THE ODEON Cleveland, Ohio On Saturday, July 24th, 1999 Julian Lennon and The Push Stars played their music well at the Odeon, located in the Cleveland Flats, near the Cuyahoga River which flows into Lake Erie. It was an Erie day with Sunshine up until 6:00pm and then a wicked storm rolled in with the sun still shining in-between the clouds. The rain stopped and a double rainbow appeared over the skys in the Cleveland Flats about an hour before the concert began. In a nut shell, The Push Stars opened up and sounded very tight and clean and entertained the crowd by letting us know that Julian is a nice guy with good music and is coming out soon to play his set of tunes. If you like the band Cake, you will love The Push Stars. Julian came out with his band and rocked the souls of his fans. One lady gave him a dozen roses before he sat down to sing a slow love ballad. He graciously accepted the roses with his right hand and placed the roses that were wrapped in crinkled green tissue paper on his lap until the song was finished. There appeared to be about three rows of women hugging the stage to see Julian up close. The rest of the crowd was mixed with males and females and some children enjoying Julian's new songs from his Photograph Smile CD. His band really rocked to the song "Crucified" which I thought sounded better live than on the CD. After the concert, Julian met with and spoke with the VIP fans sitting in the upper level. I have always known that he was a brilliant artist, musician and songwriter and have always been a faithful supporter. But watching him give his all in his performance filled me with an incredible sense of pride. Philadelphians have always been a tough bunch to please, but the audience loved every second of his show. Julian's voice was perfect, the harmonies were beautiful (I absolutely LOVE his not-yet-released "No One But You") and the band incredibly tight. The band seemed to enjoy playing as much as the audience enjoyed hearing them play. But what touched me the most was Julian's public thanks to me in front of the audience for the gifts I was able to get to him before the show. Julian, you are so very talented, kind, considerate, and with it all, you are a gentleman. You are a credit to your parents and your upbringing. Please come back to Philadelphia soon. THEATER OF LIVING ARTS Philadelphia, Pennsylvania July 27, 1999 One of the best experiences of my life was attending a Julian Lennon concert. The concert was held at "The Theater of the Living Arts" in Philadelphia on July 27, 1999. Julian has truly recieved his father's talent and songwriting abilities. He seemed to treat the audience as if they were his own private guests. The craftmanship of his songs was amazing. His songs, I believe, were worthy of a John Lennon or Beatles' album. Even if you have never heard Julian's music before you can not help but be touched by his presence and by his excellent music style. From the second Julian entered the stage till the second he left he did everything he could to put on the best possible show. That was one concert I'll never forget. Reviewed by Allyn Kurtz //0-0\\
PALOOKAVILLE Santa Cruz, California August 10, 1999 Julian Lennon Stands On His Own Tuesday afternoon, a crowd of fans gathered early outside Palookaville. They were playing old Beatles tunes and holding vigil. It seemed sad that these folks didn't appear to be here to see Julian Lennon, as they were still caught up in the loss and memory of his father, John Lennon. But Julian was to change all of this the moment he took the stage. His warmth and honest demeanor, balanced with his musical and vocal proficiency, clearly separated him from his father's shadow. He gave 200 percent to the audience throughout the night while performing material from his new album, "Photograph Smile." His songwriting reflects his human experience and pain, in life and in love, but in a mature and profound way. "Crucified" stood out as a particularly strong song...musically transporting the audience into the realms of the Middle East. "I Don't Wanna Know" had all the styles of a Beatle-esque hit but with Julian's own signature and strengths. The evening closed with Julian's dedication of "Stand By Me" to what he called a loving Santa Cruz audience. An appropriate end to a magical night from a truly gifted artist in his own right.
