Then considered the world's most popular, outspoken
counterculture couple, John Lennon and Yoko Ono made television
history when they guest-hosted The Mike Douglas Show, the most widely
watched daytime talk show of its time, from February 14 -18, 1972. It
was the first time they appeared in front of a mainstream American
television audience to speak candidly about their marriage, opposition
to the Vietnam War, equal rights and other important issues of the
day. John and Yoko's guests that week included such seminal figures of
the era as consumer advocate Ralph Nader, anti-establishment activist
Jerry Rubin, rock music pioneer Chuck Berry, Black Panthers Chairman
Bobby Seale and comedian George Carlin.
"I'd consider John Lennon and Yoko Ono two of modern history's
ultimate trailblazers - they bravely accepted risks and challenges,
followed their dreams and some would say helped change the world,"
said Margaret Heffernan, President of Programming, iCAST. "Through a
rich multi-media experience, ZineZone.com allows our audience to
better understand these trailblazer icons first hand, relive a unique
time in history and draw inspiration from their strong beliefs."
"John and Yoko's appearance on the show was groundbreaking,"
stated Arny Schorr, senior vice president and general manager, Rhino
Home Video. "It helped to raise the talk show format to a new level of
consciousness."
The Mike Douglas Show with John Lennon and Yoko Ono became more
fascinating and of greater historical significance when it was learned
the FBI used the episodes to gather evidence in their case to deport
John Lennon from the country. They believed at the time he was a
security threat and could potentially mobilize young voters in the
November 1972 elections to deny then-President Nixon's re-election.
While the government was ultimately unsuccessful in deporting Lennon,
their case against him symbolizes one of America's most turbulent,
revolutionary and liberating eras.
