We are providing the following Guidelines which were e-mailed to everyone on the List
when we first began in case you are thinking of joining our Sean Lennon list
serv, or if you are already a member and want to refresh your memory about our posting
guidelines. We rarely reject posts to the list - extreme flaming or
name-calling is usually the reason a post would be rejected when the list is
being moderated.
#1- WHO IS THE LIST-OWNER?
First let me introduce myself: I'm Marsha Ewing, the editor of the Instant Karma!
web site that you are visiting right now! To find our Sean Lennon section, go
HERE!
#2- WHERE ARE WE ?
Sean Lennon's Web-Place is being hosted by yahoo.com, which took over from
egroups.com.
#3 -SENDING MAIL TO SEAN LENNON'S WEB-PLACE:
Keep in mind that when you send a post to the address: sean-lennon@yahoogroups.com,
your message is being sent to everyone who has subscribed to this list, which in
February of 2002 is running at approximately 180 people. Please think
before you hit "send" how what you've written will affect all of the
other people on the list.
#4 - PRIVATE MAIL BETWEEN SUBSCRIBERS
Keep in mind that the List Owner has no control over private e-mails from other subscribers to your personal e-mail address. Once you post to this list,
everyone will know your e-mail address and can e-mail you off-List.
#5- WHAT WE ENCOURAGE ON THIS LIST
Discussions , critiques and comments about Sean's music, art and live concerts
.. his
collaborations with Cibo Matto, Lenny Kravitz and Yoko Ono, in fact, just about any
topic of discussion you can think of regarding Sean is encouraged.
#6 - WHAT IS NOT ALLOWED: FLAMES!
This list is sensitive to "name-calling," " threats,"
"insults" or other
"nasty" mail directed at other posters, at Sean, Yoko or anyone else for that matter.
Anyone who instigates a flame war with crude, baiting posts will be removed from
the list if the insults continue. List members are
asked not to respond to such posts, as this tends to fan the flames.
Disagreements among subscribers over various musical and artistic topics on the List are
to be expected , but if anyone tries to use the List for pointless
sniping or hate-mail, he or she will be removed from the list by the
owner. People on the list who are trying to enjoy on-topic discussions
should not have to endure insults and flames in their mailboxes. Pointless
disruptive behavior is not welcome here. Call it censorship if you wish,
but we promote this list as a friendly place for Sean's fans and we will do
whatever we can to stay true to our billing.
#7-HTML AND IMAGES
Keep in mind that if you send a letter to the list using HTML language, some
people won't be able to read your post. To ensure that everyone can read
what you've written, please make sure that HTML coding is turned off in your settings on
Netscape and Windows.
The list doesn't allow image attachments simply because many people don't want
the download time in their inboxes, or their e-mail software is not set up to
accept images.
#9- SEND ADDRESSES, NOT TEXTS
If you come across an article about Sean on the internet, please post the
address of
that site rather than the text of the entire article. This saves space in e-mail
boxes and also eliminates any copyright infringement difficulties.
As an example, if you see a review of "Into The Sun," rather than cutting, pasting and posting the review, just indicate it can be found at the
Daily News website at this url -
http://www.mostnewyork.com/now/051998/MUSIC/57646.htm
#10- EDIT
Another thing that upsets people who are receiving lots of posts from various
lists is
when someone answers another person's post, and includes the original letter in its complete
form. Please cut out everything but the one or two most important lines from the letter you
are replying to so that everyone doesn't have to see the same letters over and over and over.
#11- DIGEST
You may set your own preferences with your yahoo.com account. You
can, of course, receive individual e-mails as they are sent out - the most
popular option - or you can receive the posts in digest form. If you would prefer to receive
your Sean Lennon mail in one clump each day rather than as individual e-mails, simply
let me know at mewing@up.net and I will switch
you to the Digest or you can do it yourself by going to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sean-lennon/
and clicking "Edit my membership."
Another way to see see the posts in one place including past posts, is by going to
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sean-lennon/
and clicking "Messages."
The archives show all the posts from when we started the List, up to the most recent
post sent out today.
#12 - TO MODERATE, OR NOT TO MODERATE?
One option I have as List Owner is to Moderate the List. Some people prefer to have
a Moderated list to cut down on any potential flaming; others prefer a more free-form
List.
To Moderate means to have all of the posts come to my e-mail address from
yahoo.com.
I check each post before "okaying" it to go out to the 180 list members. If a post
is from a non-list member who is trying to send
an advertisement or chain letter, or if it is a rude or name-calling letter, I can
"reject" it. When that happens, your rejected letter to Sean Lennon's Web-Place
is returned to you by the yahoo robot. Moderating slows down everyone's mail to my
pace. If I'm away from the computer for several hours or a day or two, your posts
will not be sent out until I've reviewed them. This is one major drawback of Moderating.
Not Moderated is the way we've been doing it for quite awhile.
Your letters go out in real-time...as fast as normal internet access makes them available.
What this means is, if someone does start a flame war, I may not find out about it
until it's been going on for 24 hours or more, depending on how soon I check my
e-mail. For the past several months, we have not had any problems in this area.
If that status changes, and flame wars begin flaring up, my Moderator status will
also change. So let's all be civil and have fun. I'd rather not moderate, but will
if people can't control themselves.
#13 - LAST BUT NOT LEAST, WHY WE ARE HERE
I'm hoping this List will be an enjoyable and informative place for Sean's fans to get
together to share facts, opinions and even the occasional juicy gossip item. "Hanging out"
with people of like minds is the point of a List like this and I'm hoping that it will
continue to grow as Sean's career grows.
Thanks for your patience. And a big thanks to Richard Joly at Ono-Web
for helping me research these Guidelines, many of which are standard list-serv rules.
