Yoko made a surprise appearance at The Tonic - a club in New York City - on Friday, February 26, 1999.
Yoko performed in two one-hour sets, with no breaks between songs. The first set included "Sean's Theme." The second set included Cibo Matto fragments and a beautiful version of "Black Hole Sun."
The sets were made up of jazz, funk and samples reminiscent of Miles Davis in the 70's, The Plastic Ono Band, Cibo Matto and others.
The band was:
Yoko - Vocals
Sean Lennon - Bass, Guitar and Vocals
Timo Ellis - Drums, Vocals and Bass
Yuka Honda - Keyboards, Samples
Miho Hatori - Vocals, Percussion
Dougie Brown - Samples
Duma Love - Vocals, Samples
Dave Douglas - Trumpet
Steve reported to Ono-Net that "Sean and his collective are creating something completely new... a music so daring, so beautiful and edgy" you have to hear it to truly appreciate it.
Tonic, by the way, is a club on the Lower East Side of Manhattan that once was known as the Kadem Grape Juice Factory. Tonic has a new music series curated by various people, such as John Zorn. The Yoko-Sean-Cibo Matto show on the 26th was curated by Dave Douglas, who also played trumpet.
Our thanks to Steve Bender for letting us use his Ono-Net report about this event.
